The name OPEN LOCO implies that the source is open, like OpenTTD or OpenRTC2. Is this a goal of yours?

In his more recent video he mentioned that he will be releasing the source code at some point.

Hi there! First of all, thank you SO MUCH for your efforts, this is clearly a labour of love, and I am absolutely thrilled to have a playable version of this game.

I will point out the little inaccuracies that I've noticed while playing, only because I love the original game and want your remake to be the definitive, modern version:

- intro video is missing :(

- no music in the main menu

- toybox doesn't animate (blue shine).

- toybox handle doesn't animate, nor can you click it to start moving the toybox around, then click to drop it.

- rail and path icons in the toybox are too large. Road icons look wrong too, possibly slightly too large.

- toybox should pause the game, I saw a plane fly past as I was building and that's not something that happened in the original (planes etc. would disappear and reappear as you closed and opened the toybox). People are moving around with the toybox open and it feels very wrong!

- clicking and holding the arrow buttons in the build menus doesn't work.

- trains don't make sound

- train speed control arrows don't double when you increase speed

- can't drag and drop minifigures to move them

- train randomly stopped mid track (near some turns and points)

- after selecting the station master in the "?" menu, the train depot started making the "hyeuuh!" sound like the station master

- bomb doesn't delete people or trains

- trains aren't stopping at stations

I hope these observations are helpful - I'm not trying to diminish the great work you've done, but at the moment, it's not quite 100% complete, and I have taken the liberty of assuming that you'd appreciate comments on those small details that are easy to miss when you've been working on a project for a while.

Thank you again for recreating this gem from my childhood :)

"train randomly stopped mid track (near some turns and points)"

would like to highlight this as that has been my biggest hurdle so far. I can get it to go backwards but it remembers the point it stopped at and will continue to not go past that specific point unless I delete the train, make the area where it stopped a bit less complex (i just increase the length of a straightaway), and make a new train. Happy to share any world data or footage if it would help. Otherwise, this is fantastic work, and I appreciate the heck out of your time and effort

I"ve noticed that a lot of the people don't really go to "POI"'s the way they did in the orginial game, but instead just walk to random sidewalk tiles. Also every character has the same walk speed.

Pretty sure my YouTube comment got auto deleted, probably just for having itchio as the actual url. Good thing I copied it to my clipboard!
I'm too lazy to make an itchio account [dang it] so I'll just note my findings here: [v18]

- Overwrite / Bulldozer button doesn't seem to break all blocks if there's overlap [placing a house or hospital on a solid patch of trees leaves some behind, requiring a double click]

- Don't know specifically how, but I managed to inverted the overwrite / bulldozer button. Doesn't overwrite when depressed and does when not depressed.

- Magnifying glass seems to stop flipping, not sure how to reproduce. Also, seems the right leading edge is unmagnified at 1440p.

- Certain buildings sounds should loop: Disco, Diner, Skate (Sk8?) Shop, Lego Factory. Reasonably certain but less confident: Super Market, School, Factory.

- Two horizontal radar dishes should  combo into a rocket launch pad.

- There should be a finger twiddling animation when hovering over the handle of the toolbox, if not all the blue handles.

- If you want to strive for complete accuracy, opening the toolbox pauses everything. Certain things [I only remember Minifigs and animals for certain] stop being rendered until you close it, and building combos only combine once you close the toolbox.

Shakier in my memory:

- Didn't the toolbox have idle animations? Like having a blue streak swipe over and/or turning blue over a gradient?

- I think you could click to grab the toolbox and click again to drop? along with dragging it normally

...and that's all I've got! I'm kinda surprised how much I remember. I'd verify things if I had a virtual machine set up, but I don't. Cheers!

Amazing stuff, I'll work my way through the list, thanks!

Turns out my old patched install still works! I got the patch from my brother many years ago, my only guess is it's from the PCGaming Wiki. Did a decent amount of prodding around:

I had forgotten most building aren't named. If it has quotes in the next bullet point, that's what it's named in my copy.

- Disco/Club, Diner, "SK8 Shop", Super Market, "Police", "School", both "Factory" all loop their sound.

- Opening the toolbox does stop rendering a lot: trains, minifigs/animals, other decorations clouds BUT not tiles like the pond with Nessie and the gas storage sinking or whatever it is/does. Flying decorations like clouds and UFOs continue moving/updating despite not being rendered.

- Nessie doesn't come out of the pond normally. It usually only pokes its eyes out. You have to surround the pond with the funny yellow plant in the bottom left page of the first plants page for it to fully emerge.

- Toolbox does change to blue, starting at the top right and bottom left of the Lego logo. It's a smaller sprite, I think you're using the one when you're hovering over it. Also, there's different, larger sprites for when you're hover over and using handles.

- SK8 Shop's selection box uses a different sprite with three skateboards on the left, on grass, with "SK8" on the driveway.

- 4 fountain combo makes a rainbow when made and plays a sound. Currently lacks its animation.

- The two fountains make different sounds when clicked.

- There's actually no holding the handles, it's only click to grab and click to drop. Personally, I'd do the smart option we usually have in games nowadays where you can click, but if you hold for like half a second, it'll drop on release.

Hopefully this list isn't too scatterbrained, and apologies in advance for all the new work. lol

Heya, I'm a LEGO employee (but I'm not a legal representative and this is not legal advice), and have seen many LEGO fan games throughout the years. I just wanted to give you a recommendation since I haven't seen you reach out yet. I would really advise you to revise the cover and icon for this fan game to remove the LEGO logo and make your own icon from scratch - using the official LEGO logo for a non-LEGO product is a big no-no and could get your game shut down and removed based on that alone. The company has historically been lenient with using assets from LEGO games (see my game page for my own LEGO Rock Raiders remake) but there should be absolutely no way to confuse the game for an official or authorized LEGO product. It might also be a good idea to exclude the "lego" part of the URL to make sure there is no confusion. Feel free to reach out to me on Discord if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

Baraklava is legit, we all love Lego Loco and this project but I recommend heeding this advice on the logo use.

Hey, I appreciate the help. I know your game and checked over the page, as well as your in game disclaimer etc. This page was mostly placeholder from when it was private, I'll get to updating it.

Looks better now! Hoping there won't be any issues, keep up the good work :)

I absolutely commend and thank you for bringing one of my favorite games of all time to a playable state today without the need of emulating windows. That being said, I hope some things with the people can be addressed, like being able to pick them up and have sounds for one, but also it seems like they walk to just random places on the sidewalk, rather than go to certain points of interest like they did in the actual game. Also it seems like everyone shares the same walk speed, which is the nittest of all nitpicks but it's just kinda hilarious to see the old lady zip zoom all over the map.

Oh wow!  Amazing job!  I always thought this game looked so cool as a kid!  Glad you gave it some real TLC.  Thanks!

I love it brings me right back to my childhood. However, I’m having a problem with Version 16. Every time I try to build roads, the game freezes and my PC goes insane. I have to alt-tab out and close the game using the Task Manager.

Maybe important notes that can help:

OS: Windows 11

CPU: Ryzen 7800X3D

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 TI

RAM: 32GB

Resolution: 1920x1080 170hz

Multi Moniter Setup

Still great that you remade a part of my childhood.

Hmm that's a weird one, is it any road you're placing, or a specific piece? Are you able to place everything else down?

I’ve tested around and I think it’s just freezing over time. I kept the game open and it froze after 10–15 minutes. In another session, I tested if it could be because of tabbing out and in again, but this seems to not be the problem.

There have been some random crashes that very rarely occur, it could have just been that. Out of a lot of playtesting, I haven't had one but it seems like there's some perfect mix that breaks everything.

I was able to play the Linux Version with Lutris and it works fine! Weird things are happening when placing things, tho. Sometimes the game deletes adjacent Structures that do not clip.  It seems to be dependent on how you move your mouse. Another thing I noticed but have not yet had time to double-check is how trains treat switches. When a train is coming down a switch in reverse, it still switches off the track even if it physically shouldn't be able to.

The only thing I'm really missing otherwise is the possibility to Zoom in and out. Especially on bigger screens, everything seems to become really tiny.

I loved this game so much, so cool that you made this!

There are still a few bugs with the train reversing into a corner rail, and I cannot write psotcards or send them. But I am still SO happy you put in all this effort for this remaster!

Is having Lego in the page title here going to be an issue? I have seen Lego go after projects they're otherwise fine with just because of that, including on Itchio. But obviously not including it makes it less obvious what it's supposed to be.

I'm running a 34"UW, 3440x1440. The tool box isn't fully accessible, meaning I'm unable to place buildings.

Would it be possible to add a menu to set the game resolution / run in a windowed mode?

This is a snip of the top left corner of the game.

Fair play for all of your hard work on this - I only found the game a couple of days ago and have been watching your dev logs.

Yeah i haven't done anything with uktrawide, I'll look into it haha

I've just released a patch that forces the game to be 16:9, with bars around the edges. A very rough fix but should do the job for now.

Did Unity remove the launch window? I know a lot of older unity games having a launch window where yo ucould select resolution, window mode and graphics quality, which would remove the need of a settings menu in game

Just a few minutes in and i already found some spectacular bugs, build a yellow trainstation with tracks to the right and then build that farm house that connects when placed next to each other with one empty grid inbetween. As soon as they connect the train station gets destroyed.

Things flying over the screen on an empty map are way too frequent, the game doesn't pause when opening the tool box, and clicking on the buttons in the toolbox twice to open and close a menu the icon disappears, until it is reopened and closed with the X on the bottom again.

The building connection I believe is because bulldoze mode is bugged and doesn't pick the right spots, I'll get onto that one.

As for the flying random things, I'll make sure to add a delay because it does just fly back and forth, and I'm aware of the dodgy buttons, I'll make sure to look into all of them very soon.

Appreciate the feedback!

Ah finally I was able to continue building, but one of the updates seem to have broken the trains...

Trains don't make a sound when leaving the depot, trains can't take curves (mine got stuck), created trains aren't saved (therefore they also don't save their cargo) and don't leave the depot automatically when loading the map.

And eraser is bugged as well, when the build menu is open and I click on the eraser and then click on a building in the menu again, the eraser button in the tool box is still active, when I click it to make it inactive my cursor changes to the eraser and button is reversed until I click a building again when the cursor is set to eraser.

I thought I fixed every way the button got stuck but nope, you've found another haha thanks.

As for the trains, aside from getting stuck on corners the other features haven't been added to any build yet, that'll come soon.

Thanks for the help!

Version 17 and I still notice weird issues. Currently all joined buildings are removed on load and continue, backdrop is not stored in save game and the joined big fountain is really blurry/pixelated.

I guess trains stay untouched until all other issues are fixed. I hope to see the reason for the trains getting stuck on cornes make into an upcoming video.

(1 edit)

Ah, the joined buildings were missing from a list, that took me 5 seconds to fix, thanks. The fountain's compression was too much for it's sprite sheet, that's also sorted. As for the backdrop I'm unsure about. Is it any backdrop in particular? I haven't experienced that issue at all.

I've been tweaking the trains bit by bit with different interactions but yeah, they still get stuck, I think I know why but that's a slightly longer fix.

New vid should be out today where I talked about them quite a bit so stay tuned for that, appreciate the help!

hi!  will you be releasing this for mac?  this was one of my favorite childhood games and now i just have to find a device to play it on lol

Dude.... this was one of my favorite games as a kid. Thank you for making this!
